Welding tractors offer fabricators more functions to increase productivity, quality

To increase productivity, consistency, flexibility and ergonomics compared to manual welding, ESAB has introduced its battery-powered Tracfinder Rail and Tracfinder Wheel modular tractors for mechanised welding and cutting.

Welding tractors offer fabricators more functions to increase productivity, quality

Tracfinder Rail is designed for horizontal and vertical welding in all positions using high stability rails with rack and pinion transmission to prevent slippage at speeds up to 180 cm/min. ESAB's innovative teaching software empowers users to easily program precise weld paths with up to 50 points, ensuring accuracy along the weld seam.

Tracfinder Wheel, the most versatile autonomous welding tractor on the market, features a magnetic base with 28 kg of magnetic force that enables it to operate in all welding positions at speeds up to 200 cm/min, including vertical up and down, overhead and on inside and outside diameters. The new innovative tracking software adjusts the Tracfinder Wheel's trajectory based on torch position settings, eliminating the need for rails and minimising setup time. Dual motorisation with independent left/right control and 4-wheel drive deliver superior traction and stability in any welding position. For added convenience, the optional remote control lets operators adjust direction on the move just like steering a remote controlled car.

Designed for maximum flexibility, Tracfinder tractors feature a common platform that is available with Standard, Advanced and Advanced+ control packages. The two Advanced+ package includes a communication box enabling seamless two-way communication with the Aristo Edge 500R power source with RobustFeed Edge wire feeder. This allows operators to control arc start/stop, select weld jobs, and adjust weld parameters directly from the system for maximum efficiency and precision.

Both Tracfinder advanced controls enable users to save up to 30 tractor jobs and storing variables such as weld speed and length, delays, repetitions, stitch welding, back-step welding, three standard weaving patters, the ability to customize the weave dwell time, width and speed, and a special multi-axis weaving function that combines horizontal and vertical weaving to enable weaving at any specified angle. Because all systems feature a common central control base and components, users can start out with the Standard control and upgrade to an Advanced or Advanced+ control.

"With their digital controls, modularity and flexibility, Tracfinder Rail and Tracfinder Wheel represent the next generation of productivity tools available to fabricators," says Tom van Dooren, Global Product Manager, Integrated Robotic Systems and Mechanised Solutions. "Their enhanced capabilities expand the application possibilities of companies who want to weld long, and even not so long, joints and seams. The initial Tracfinder products are for MIG/MAG and flux cored welding, and we will be adding capabilities for oxy-fuel cutting, plasma cutting and carbon arc gouging in 2026."

Applications include those associated with shipbuilding, offshore yards, structural steel, tank and vessel, pipeline, wind tower, repair and maintenance (especially hardfacing) and high-volume fabrication. Operating time for the carriage battery is between 10 to 20 hours, enabling the tractor to run for an entire shift before swapping out the battery, which is a standard Li-ion 18V power tool battery.

Welding tractors increase travel speeds/deposition rates by up to 100 percent compared to manual welding. They move faster, don't need to stop for repositioning and enable welding with higher parameters and/or larger diameter wires. By making continuous welds, tractors reduce rework associated with start/stop defects. In applications where customers expect uniform weld bead profile and penetration, mechanised tractors deliver consistency without the cost or complexity of automation. Especially when using the wireless remote controller, tractors reduce operator stress by reducing fume and UV radiation exposure, as well as reduce welding in uncomfortable positions.
