The evolution of connection technology

The transformation of the automotive industry calls for new solutions - including in the field of fastening technology. ARNOLD UMFORMTECHNIK demonstrates how technological diversity, increasing demands, and regulatory pressure are translated into robust, production-ready solutions.

The evolution of connection technology

The automotive industry is in the midst of the greatest transformation in its history. Electric powertrains, hybrid concepts, and traditional internal combustion engines coexist - significantly increasing technical, economic, and regulatory complexity. For suppliers, this means they must master different technological worlds simultaneously.

"For us, transformation isn't about choosing one or the other, but about mastering different worlds at the same time. We must develop solutions that work just as well in hybrid concepts as they do in purely electric platforms," explains Mario Metzger, Managing Director of ARNOLD UMFORMTECHNIK.

ARNOLD is addressing this development with a clear approach: joining technology is not viewed in isolation, but as an integral part of functional systems. Especially in electrified vehicles, it determines safety, efficiency, and service life.

Mechanical connections play a key role in high-voltage systems. Even the slightest contact resistance can affect performance. At the same time, screw connections must remain stable through thousands of charging cycles, vibrations, and thermal cycling. Requirements for leak tightness and technical cleanliness are increasing.

Stable and clean connections are also essential in inverter and power electronics systems. Even the smallest particles can disrupt EMC performance. Process reliability is achieved through functional geometries, integrated elements, and documented assembly processes.

In lightweight construction, different materials such as aluminium and steel come into contact with one another. Connection solutions here must be mechanically robust, corrosion-resistant, and easy to assemble.

Through the iFast Competence Center, ARNOLD takes a holistic approach to electrical screw connections. The focus is on conductivity, cleanliness, and leak tightness.

This is complemented by comprehensive engineering - from simulation and design to testing methods and process monitoring. The goals are reliable data, stable processes, and verifiable documentation for OEMs.

Regulatory requirements as drivers of innovation

Euro 7, the EU Battery Regulation, and increasing traceability requirements are putting pressure on manufacturers and suppliers. At the same time, they present opportunities for companies that have a systematic grasp of quality and validation.

ARNOLD sees itself as a partner throughout the entire product lifecycle - from development to series production. Connectivity technology thus becomes a key enabler of modern mobility concepts.
