Permabond structural epoxy ideal for aluminium bonding

Permabond ET5422 structural epoxy is a blue, extremely high strength two-part epoxy adhesive was developed for a spacecraft project and later adopted by an aircraft parts manufacturer.

ET5422 offers high peel strength and achieves exceptionally high structural bond strength and performance. The material is fully toughened with second-generation core shell rubber technology to provide excellent impact, vibration, peel, shear strength, and exceptionally high aluminium bond strength.

Permabond says ET5422 provides high-strength adhesion to many engineering materials and is ideal for replacing welding. It allows greater freedom of material selection with its ability to bond dissimilar materials and seals against moisture and chemicals. It can also be used instead of mechanical fasteners, helping to keep assemblies lightweight and rattle-free without compromising the structure with holes for fasteners.

This easy-to-use room temperature curing epoxy adhesive consists of resin and hardener and is supplied in convenient dual cartridges for dispensing via a handgun. The adhesive is mixed and dispensed via static mixing nozzles. It can also be supplied in bulk for use with automatic dispensing equipment. Full cure can be achieved at room temperature, although cure times can be reduced with the application of heat.

In addition to reducing cure time, heat curing can be used to tailor the cured properties of the adhesive. For example, the peel strength on aluminium tested to ISO4578 when cured 1hour at 60°C is 270 N/25mm (59 PIW). However, cured for 5 days at 23°C it is 320 N/25mm (70 PIW).

Although this blue aerospace adhesive is used in spacecraft and aircraft, manufacturers of sports equipment, automotive parts, and others have benefited from its strength for aluminium bonding and bonding many other substrates.
