Permabond launches new multi-purpose adhesive, TA4551

Permabond announces the launch of a new structural acrylic adhesive, Permabond TA4551. This two-part, 2:1, low-odour product is suited for bonding a wide variety of substrates, including certain types of nylon.

Permabond launches new multi-purpose adhesive, TA4551

Permabond TA4551 exhibits strong bonding performance on a multitude of substrates. This multi-purpose adhesive bonds metals such as aluminium and many types of steel, plastics like polycarbonate and acrylic (PMMA), composites such as carbon fibre, and traditionally more challenging materials such as nylon.

Nylon has historically been a tough substrate to bond with adhesives due to its hydrophobicity and hygroscopicity. In plain English, this means that it draws in moisture from the air around it, while repelling liquids (such as adhesives) on its surface. This can make it very difficult for an adhesive to effectively wet the nylon for bonding.

Permabond TA4551, however - and much like its sister product, Permabond TA4550 - overcomes these challenges with ease. Both nylon 6 and 6.6 can be bonded with TA4551 without the need for any pre-treatment of the nylon beforehand.

Thixotropic with fast room temperature cure

Permabond TA4551 is thixotropic and non-slumping. This makes it highly suited to applications with vertical surfaces, as the adhesive will stay in place after application. It has a fast, room temperature cure for an acrylic adhesive, with working strength reached in as little as 2 hours. Handling time is achieved in approximately 25-30 minutes.

Another benefit of TA4551 is its high level of toughening. This not only lends it a higher overall bond strength, but also makes it resistant to stress, impact and vibration. In addition, it has an open time of 15 minutes at room temperature. This allows for accurate alignment of parts before bonding, and also makes it highly suited to bonding large surface areas.
