Permabond recently launched Permabond LH055, an anaerobic thread sealant that forms an instant, durable pressure seal on many metals. One of this product's key highlights is its PFAS-free formulation, making it ideally suited for a world of constantly evolving regulations around chemical usage. But this isn't the only way that this product is forward-looking - it also happens to be highly resistant to biodiesel.
Biodiesel is a renewable fuel made from vegetable or animal fats, or recycled cooking oils. It is becoming popular in haulage and commercial fleet operations, as well as in agriculture and some industrial operations.
While better for the environment than petroleum diesel, biodiesel can be chemically aggressive when coming into contact with certain materials. For example, it can cause rubber to swell and become brittle over time, potentially leading to leaks from rubber gaskets or seals. Manufacturers are therefore increasingly seeking out products that can withstand contact with biodiesel, with no loss of performance.
Biodiesel-resistant adhesive
Enter Permabond LH055, which is not only biodiesel-resistant, but also withstands exposure to other automotive fluids. Permabond has performed extensive in-house testing where it immersed LH055 in HVO100 biodiesel, AdBlue and windshield washer fluid for both 500 and 1,000 hours respectively. After 500 hours, exposure to both biodiesel and AdBlue actually caused an increase in the adhesive's torque strength.
However, LH055 is more than just a biodiesel-resistant adhesive. As previously mentioned, it's also PFAS-free, and with many manufacturers looking to source products that don't contain PFAS in light of ongoing and future changes in legislation, choosing this adhesive already puts you on the front foot.
LH055 also has a low breakaway torque, meaning that while it provides a strong, durable seal, the seal can be undone later when servicing or maintenance is required. Unlike adhesives with a higher breakaway torque, this can be achieved using normal tools. This makes LH055 an ideal solution for bonding parts that have regular service intervals or those that need to be taken apart to access other areas of a product.
Another feature of LH055 is its suitability for sealing threaded pipes containing a variety of substances. It has KTW-BWGL as well as WRAS approval for contact with drinking water, as well as DVGW gas approval. In addition, the adhesive is highly chemically resistant, making it a well-rounded product suited to demanding industrial and plumbing applications.
