Latest LOCTITE adhesives showcase ‘pioneering’ approach to sustainability

LOCTITE is highlighting how ongoing improvements to its adhesive solutions can help businesses to improve their manufacturing efficiency in a more sustainable way.

Latest LOCTITE adhesives showcase ‘pioneering’ approach to sustainability

To help customers understand the environment impact of its products, the brand has created four categories. All LOCTITE solutions are now classified as one of the following:

Pioneer products that offer tangible improvements in sustainability compared to average market solution or standard

Contributor products that deliver a positive contribution in terms of sustainability, without necessarily being better than other available products

Straight performer products that contain no harmful substances

Challenged products that may contain substances harmful for health and safety

One of the cornerstone initiatives in the Pioneer class has been the removal of potentially harmful materials such as Hydroquinone (HQ). Although the original formulation only carried very small amounts of the substance, LOCTITE has responded to regulatory change requirements and industry demand by developing a novel stabiliser package, which removes the need for HQ from the formulas for the most widely used products in its LOCTITE Instant Adhesive range.

Another change is the patented technology used across LOCTITE H&S products including LOCTITE 2400 and 2700 which is formulated to eliminate the need for hazardous substances. As a result, they are classified as non-hazardous, meaning they don't need to carry hazard warnings under CLP regulations that would trigger a COSH assessment.

Consequently, with time and effort saved on compliance, resources can instead be focused on manufacturing making for a more efficient process.

Good manufacturing practice now requires, rightly, an understanding of the environmental impact of any given technique or solution, explained Gavin Jackson, applications engineering manager at LOCTITE brand owner, Henkel Adhesive Technologies. Engineers should be aware of exactly what they're using, and be diligent when sourcing suppliers to be sure they have a proven track record of improving their sustainability.

The Henkel commitment to sustainability is backed by a platinum score with Ecovadis, the most renowned rating system within the industry for assessing sustainability performance. Adhering to Ecovadis is an ongoing process and audited annually by external stakeholders resulting in a reliable barometer for recognising and promoting environmentally and socially responsible business practices.
